A Trainspotters Original
Back in early 2022, we posted a blog called “Wooden Features” in which we told the salvage story of some remarkable mid-century lights from a disbanded chapel in Lambeth, South London.
The lights were actually chandeliers that were hanging at second storey level within a cavernous hall, presumably where worship and ceremonies had taken place over the years. Up there in the rafters they seemed a bit lost and insignificant but we could still see they had potential, with their two tone wood and oversized bulbs. But it wasn’t until we got them down to ground level that we really saw what they were – beautifully hand-crafted Scandinavian style solid wood lights, in really amazing condition. So we returned them to the workshops in Stroud the same day, tidied them up over the following week (they didn’t need much more than a polish and rewire) and listed them on the website that same week.
Somewhat unexpectedly, they were immediately snapped up and within a couple of days we had sold them all – a number to good customers in Norway, another couple to a hospitality customer here in the UK and the last few to individual collectors of Mid Century for their own domestic use. And that was that.
However the enquiries kept coming… and although chandeliers are a bit of a departure from our usual type of pendant light, it was really clear that they were still very much in demand. This is when we decided to embark on sourcing someone in the world of wood who could help us lovingly remake them.
This process has take about 2 years, from salvaging the originals, through numerous prototypes to finally launching the Trainspotters Classic remake version at the start of June. But we definitely think the wait has paid off. We’ve been very considered at each step – making sure proportions feel right, fine tuning the joinery, ensuring the balance between wood types is harmonious and finding the most complimentary fixtures and fittings – it’s like slow fashion but for lighting and its how we prefer to do business.
We’re very proud to launch The Scandinavian Chandelier – a faithful reworking, solid, simple and elegant. This versatile pendant happily lends itself to both domestic and commercial interiors. Joinery-made using solid wood FSC certified Sapele and Maple, each chandelier includes five “Porcelain III” dimmable LED globes by premium bulb company Tala. We will be producing these to order so please allow roughly six week to delivery.

We don’t often wade into politics – but last week, we were hit with something that made it impossible to ignore. One of our most cherished remakes is the Concorde Pendant Light. These aren’t just any fixtures – the originals were salvaged from the Concorde hangar at Heathrow Airport back in the 2010s. That’s where their …
A very good question! And one we get asked an awful lot. But here’s the interesting bit – dimming has very little to do with our light fittings themselves! Dimmability is about three closely-related components – wiring to the light, the switch that controls the light, and the bulb inside the light. Perhaps not what …
