2022 Lighting Trends
We’re not trend setters and we’ve never tried, we just do what we do and we try to do it well. So when we’re asked what the hotspots are in the world of interiors, we prefer to look to the experts for their scoop. Thus, here is our round-up of the trends when it comes to lighting in 2022.
Vintage
Of course, vintage is ingrained in what we do. The word, as a general term encompasses a raft of sub-categories including retro, antique, reclaimed, salvaged, secondhand and sustainable to name a few. Trainspotters lighting certainly ticks those boxes.
Vintage and Reclaimed both get a section in Forbes’ Top 20 interior design trends for 2022 where Emma Kemper, Principal Designer of Emma Beryl writes
“There is no greener choice than going with vintage.”
“It is sustainably responsible since you aren’t using resources to build a new piece… and from an aesthetic perspective, it is such a wonderful way to make your space feel timeless. When you include pieces that are from all different eras it’s impossible to date your space and the design feels unexpected and fresh.”
LivingEtc ranks Art Deco Shapes at number two in their top six trends list for this year.
There’s a reason why history repeats itself – we see the simplistic luxury of deco style return to trend lists year after year. Never overly-complicated, the clever craftsmanship of pieces from the period speaks for itself and never was opaline more adored than in the Deco era.
Smaller budgets may not necessarily stretch to opaline but there are plenty of white glass alternatives that will provide a very similar look, and as you get more bang for buck with this option, buying in multiples is possible.
“There is always a sense of nostalgia when it comes to design and there are certain eras that we like referring back to more often than to others,”
says Linda Boronkay, former Design Director of Soho House
“and on this occasion, we’re talking Art Deco. Art Deco is one such style, why? because it provides endless sources of inspiration with its signature silhouettes, materials, and colors.”
Albeit not specifically related to lighting but certainly a stand out prediction, is Homes & Gardens’ number five – Reimagined Design Classics – something we can definitely get on board with.
There’s few things more satisfying than taking an old light that has been unloved, that’s been covered in dirt and grime for years and putting some love back into it. Giving old classics a new lease of life is what we do and in fact, more often than not they don’t just return to their former glory, they well exceed it.
In refinery29’s decor trends article, Etsy’s resident trends expert Dayna Isom Johnson predicts that Statement Lighting will be very much on-trend in 2022.
“There’s been a 27% increase in searches for sculptural or decorative lighting, a 25% increase in searches for vintage lighting, and a 22% increase in searches for colourful lighting.” She adds
“statement lighting allows folks to spotlight their beautiful homes, while doubling as eye-catching artwork”.
In House Beautiful, Statement Lighting is number one on the trend list – the idea of switching out the three-small-pendants stalwart over kitchen islands and dining tables, for something extra large, super eye-catching that shouts more ‘decorative object’ than practical task solution.
Probably the most heavily mentioned trend across all the interiors platforms, Sustainability is king in 2022. Though we hope this is not a fleeting trend but a paradigm shift…
Powerhouse Vogue lists Vintage and Sustainable accents as one its top trend predictions for this year… quoting Athena Calderone
“By repurposing the old, the damaged, the jagged into something new, we’re reducing our footprint while bringing a rich sense of history and spirit into a space.”
House Beautiful says “2022 will see a further emphasis on sustainable materials, responsible manufacturing, and the reuse and resale of furniture and homeware.”
Ben White, design and trade expert at Swyft says “Sustainability and use of organic materials have become prominent in recent years. With the public’s increased exposure to climate change, the idea of sustainability has fed into the interior industry and our homes…
“investing in meaningless furniture and accessories is a thing of the past.”
Forbes also dedicates substantial editorial to sustainability in their 2022 trend list…
“The sustainability part of “going green” relates to choosing high-quality materials that won’t have to be replaced for decades,” or as Nancy Epstein, Founder of Artistic Tile says, “even for generations.”
“We’re pleased to see a growing emphasis on environmental awareness in product selection motivating designers and their clients, and it’s a motive that squares with one of our core philosophies:
“build well, with the right materials, the first time. Build for inheritability.”
Epstein also notes “There is a growing awareness that the impact of constant renovation to keep apace the latest trends is unsustainable and poor environmental stewardship. By choosing what they love the first time, they are also participating in a reformed economy – one in which we no longer embrace the fast-casual, disposable approach.”
And lastly The Spruce provides there thoughts on sustainability as a trend leader in 2022
“Especially now, there is even more of a focus on sustainability – in furniture, in products, in lighting, and in how we design our spaces. Materials that are reclaimed, recycled, and ethically sourced will gain more attention through the years,” says Yoselin Castro, Senior Interior Designer at Mackenzie Collier Interiors“especially as the younger generations who have been heavily involved in the sustainability movement begin to buy and renovate homes for themselves.”
